journey from trivandrum to madras /chennai

We travelled from trivandrum to madras around christmas last year.The journey was via martandam, tirunelveli , madurai , trichy and then to chennai.

Since we left from trivandrum early in the morning (around 4.30 am) , there was no block on the roads (usually there is a lot of congestion at martandam, tirunelveli etc.) . The 4 lane highway is pretty good , except for some work going on at tirunelveli and trichy. Near trichy , there were lots of big potholes on the road and the traffic was pretty slow due to some big trailers going very slow on some narrow roads. There were lots of places ending with patti along the way to chennai.

There were also lots of toll booths along the way.

After madurai there were some vegetarian restaurants (dhaba ?) attached to the bpcl ? (bharat petroleum) petrol pumps. They seemed to be quite neat and the toilet facilities for both genders seemed to be okay.

We reached the outskirts of chennai around 5:30pm. We asked some truck drivers for directions to Kottivakkam. They kindly pointed out that entering Chennai city and travelling in Chennai traffic without knowing the proper route at night time was not the best option (we could understood that the next day when we drove around with one of our relatives especially with lots of flyovers and some construction works going on.). They told us that the better option would be to go back to Vandalur, and then use some state highway to get to the ECR (east coast road) and use the ECR to get to Kottivakkam.

We had to ask directions at some places. The people were very helpful. The only problem was stopping the car at some places because of the heavy evening traffic. The State highway was pretty deserted and there were some large potholes also on that. But once we reached ECR, it was a pretty straight road, and we had to ask directions only at a petrol pump for the correct turn into a side lane.
