buying a sewing machine

My wife wanted to buy a sewing machine for some time. We went to look for a sewing machine at a shop near the palayam market. There were many types of lower cost machines ranging from small tabletop machines (running on electricity) costing around 3000 rupees to 4000 rupees and manual sewing machines starting from around 5200 rupees for usha sewing machines , meritt sewing machines , singer sewing machines and so on. There were also some electrical sewing machines costing around 7000 rupees to 8000 rupees with a mixer (mixie ) as free gift.

My wife wanted to buy a manually operated singer sewing machine. The shop keeper told us that some of the internal parts of that particular sewing machine could be easily accessed by the lay user. The singer sewing machine cost around Rs.5800 /-. We used an autorickshaw to take it from the shop. The sewing machine came with some spare bobbins, screw drivers, some lubrication oil, washers etc.

live cd

In the earlier days, I was running windows 98. Sometime back, something happened to some sectors of the hard disk and the computer did not boot up into win 98. It was then I began to think about live cd distributions.
I had seen some cd's /dvd's which contained live distros of linux which were given away with computer magazines like chip.

But I could not locate those cd's when I needed them. There was a computer shop past which I walk on most days without paying that much attention. Then I noticed that , that particular shop specialised in open source software and advertised linunx distributions including live cds.

I asked them about the distributions. They recommended kubuntu and knoppix. I bought those two cds for around Rs.60/-. The kubuntu cd loaded up but could not be used since the computer that I was using had only a small amount of random access memory ( i guess). But the knoppix cd worked very well and could detect the internet connection by itself.mp3 music files could also be played and it had a nice image manipulation software called gimp and some nice office software for document editing called libre office.

journey from trivandrum to sholingur

We recently travelled from trivandrum to sholingur. We travelled from trivandrum to madurai and then to trichy via the usual four lane highway. Then we proceeded on the chennai route from trichy along NH45.
We went upto vilupuram on this route and then asked some lorry drivers about the route to gingee. They told us to proceed a bit more and turn left at a point with a check point.we turned there and found a signboard pointing the route.
There were fields on both sided for some distance and a lot of vehicles carrying sugarcane were also on the road. After some distance we asked about the route to arani and arcot.The local people were very helpful and pointed out the route. There were also some signboards. Some portions of the road were very bad and full of potholes.
At arcot, we asked about the route to wallajah. One person on a two wheeler was very helpful and showed us the way through some side lanes and across the four lane highway on to the route to sholingur through wallaja.
After that it was a pretty nice road all the way to sholingur. But there were some educational institutions and also many speed breakers on this bit of the road. Also a lot of school and college buses were plying this route at that time.
Sholingur was a pretty small town. Near the place we were staying , all the houses had some sort of weaving machine (electric looms)that were running all the time even at night. It seems to be very close to the karnataka border and the gold mines.

I usually buy a sweet called katchod or chandrakala which is in the shape of a half moon. The ordinary variety costs about Rs. 200 /- a kilo and the special variety around Rs.250/- a kilo.
It seems to be some samosa like sweet with sweet stuffing inside it.
Pal gova is another sweet which I think contains sweetened milk concentrate.
Boondhi, contains small sweetened spherical pieces of fried flour (which looks like the components of laddu).
Badam gheer is another beverage common in Thanjavur

KYC know your client norms for mutual fund investment

I used to invest in mutual funds a few years back. I wanted to restart some of that. So when I was reading up on mutual funds I saw that KYC (know your client) norms had been implemented.

On the internet, the phone number and address of some places in trivandrum were given.
But then I thought about enquiring at CAMS (computer management service pvt ltd) office at Pattom.

The staff in the office said that they handle KYC verification there.

I was asked to fill a one page form, and provide self attested pan card copy and address proof (like driving licence, voter id etc).

I was given an acknowledgement .

On that cvlindia.com was given as the website to make inquiry about the kyc application.

Travelling from tanjore to trivandrum via trichy

This week I travelled from thanjavur to trivandrum via trichy.
There are private buses at the new bus stand in thanjavur for the trip from thanjavur to trichy of around 50 km. Even though there are private buses for this route every 5 or 10 minutes, they seem to be crowded in the evenings.

This time since it was a holiday, I decided to start at around 3pm and reached the new bus stand around 3:30 pm. Originally I thought of going to madurai directly from thanjavur and from there to trivandrum. But the bus to madurai was very crowded. So I wandered off to the other side of the bus stand to the place where the buses to trichy were parked.

There I saw an SETC bus going to trichy. It was a spare bus which was going to trichy and was driven by a mechanic(I think) . There was another SETC bus which had broken down on the tanjavur trichy express way. The driver of the bus I got into, reached the other SETC bus and the driver and his partner got down there and were replaced by the driver and conductor of the SETC bus which had broken down on the highway.
The new driver drove the bus I had gotten in upto trichy. The trip was pretty comfortable with the seats being of the push back variety common in the ultra deluxe buses operated by SETC and took around one hour.

It was raining heavily in trichy when I reached there.
I enquired at the SETC counter about buses to trivandrum. I think I was misunderstood by the persons there, that I was asking about buses starting from trichy. He told me that all the buses to trivandrum were fully booked. I was looking around for other options like buses to madurai, when I saw a SETC bus to trivandrum parked there (sometime around 5pm i guess). I think it was a bus which was going from madras (chennai)or some other place to trivandrum. There were some vacant seats on that bus. I boarded that bus.

Since it was raining heavily, the floor of that bus was completely wet.
The ticket to trivandrum was around Rs.250. The seats were of the push back variety.

When the bus reached madurai, it was raining quite heavily in madurai too. The bus stopped for some time in madurai. I got down there and had some tea . After around 80 or 90 kms from madurai (after satur), the bus stopped at a sort of wayside hotel (where most of the SETC buses seem to stop now) on the right hand side as you go from trichy to trivandrum.

That place was fully filled at that time as around 7 or 8 SETC buses parked there. The price they charged for tea and other eatables was more than the average when you consider the ambience of the place. (lesson being that you should ask about the price before you order anything if you are going to an unfamiliar place)

I think the bus we were travelling had some mechanical problem, and the bus was taken to the SETC garage in tirunelveli, and we were asked to board another bus there for the rest of the trip to trivandrum.

We reached trivandrum sometime close to 4am in the morning.

pattom junction in trivandrum, kerala

Pattom is a place in trivandrum city, the capital city of kerala state in india.
The junction is very crowded from around 8am to 11 am and from 4 pm to 7 pm.

There are many schools close to pattom. One of the schools , the kendriya vidyalaya or central school which conducts classes with cbse syllabus or central school has two shifts. The pattom post office used to be located opposite this school long ago , but it is now at pattom junction. The pin code is 695004.

The office premises and a sales outlet of MILMA (milk market federation ) is also close to pattom junction. The KSEB (kerala state electricity board ) offices are also close to this office.

So there is a lot of crowd in front of the school in the morning, afternoon and evening. Near the school, the shopping centre of Spencer, state bank of india SBI, state bank of travancore sbt branches are also located. So a lot of vehicles are parked on the side of the road at most times.

On the opposite side there is the LIC building. Earlier a customer service centre of BSNL was located inside that compound. There is also a railway booking centre in that compound.

The Public service commission (PSC) office which is in charge of appointing job seekers to jobs in the kerala government service and some schools and colleges is also located at pattom. There are protestors on some days waving flags and squatting on the road protesting against some aspect of functioning of the psc.

There are two petrol pumps at pattom. One is of Indian oil.

There is a diamond jewellery shop and a gold jewellery shop near pattom junction.

There are some small tea shops (thattukada type) which sell tea and snacks like vada, vazhakka appam (banana fry), ulli vada (onion vada) etc at pattom junction. There are a couple of cobblers who repair umbrellas and footwear who usually sit on the footpath waiting for customers.

The DP and domestic MF companies will take up the KYC of the foreign clients.

The question is if this will increase inflow of capital into indian mutual funds?

Today I bought gingelly oil (nallenna) which cost about Rs. 80/- for half a litre.
Coconut oil (velichenna ) prices have also been soaring from about Rs. 75 /- a kilo (some months back) to close to Rs.120/- per kilo.
The sugar I bought today cost about Rs.35/- per kg.
The kayam powder cost about Rs.43 /- for 50 grams.
The price of vim drops (cleaning solution) has gone up to around 80 rupees from around 70 rupees some months back.
The price of cooking gas (lpg) has also gone up.
The minimum cost of bus tickets is going to be increased in kerala.

another route from martandam to trivandrum

When we returned from thanjavur to trivandrum this time round, we decided to use the route via poovar for the portion of the route from tamilnadu - kerala border to trivandrum . The usual route is via the nh through neyattinkara and is very congested.

Just close to the checkpost on the tamilnadu - kerala border, we asked at one of the shops about the route to poovar. The man there told us to take the route to the left (as we travel from martandam to trivandrum) just after the check post. The road was pretty good and not as congested as the nh. There were some speedbreakers on the path, and some steep ascents.

The road ran through cheruvarakonam, oorambu, uchakkada then to poovar, and then we turned to the road to vizhinjam, and then to kovalam and afterwards on the bypass to pettah and then into trivandrum city from there.

journey from karaikudi to tanjore via pudukottai

I recently travelled from karaikudi to tanjore via the old highway through pudukkottai.
The highway is of the old type with two lanes. Ask somebody for the old route to trichy or chennai from karaikkudi (not the new four lane expressway).I think it is NH 210 for some distance at the beginning and NH 226 after that. You go along that route upto Pudukkotai. After that you the route splits into two. We went along the road to Thanjavur from there. The other route goes to trichy. I guess the whole distance was some where close to 130 km.
The road had lots of potholes with some very deep holes . There are some speedbreakers (bumps ) which are unmarked. There are also some railway crossings. There were lots of tamarind trees on both sides of the road in some stretches. At one place there were some persons selling (fresh) cashew nuts by the road side.

The bus stand at trivandrum is at Thampanoor. The railway station is also situated there. There is another railway station at kochu veli. The airport is close to the sea at shangumugham.

There is a nice little indian coffee house at thampanoor itself which is somewhat like a cylinder in shape.

There is another indian coffee house at Medical college and I think there is one between Statue and Palayam. The cutlets, rose mik and biriyani from the coffee house at medical college seemed to be pretty good when I was young, because the number of good hotels in the city was very small in those days.

Another hotel which my father liked was Azad hotel at statue(This hotel is no longer there at statue). There are other branches inside Chalai and one on the road side between smv school and east fort. The liver fry and mutton chops were pretty good in those days.

There is another hotel called Buhari hotel at attakulangara (close to east fort) where pretty good mutton curry is served. I think that this hotel serves food into the late hours of the night.

Most of the buses from trichy to thanjavur (tanjore) stop at the new bus stand (puthu perinth or something ). From there you can take an auto to go into the town (It costs around Rs.100 /- to go from the new bus stand to to somewhere close to the railway station (rail-adi) (thanjavur junction) (anyway ask the auto driver about the charges before you board the auto).

If you can talk/read a bit of tamil, there are lots of buses which run between the new bus stand and old bus stand (pazhayya perinth i think). One of the buses I got in was a trailer bus. It costs only about 2.50 or 3 rupees for the trip by transport bus.

At the new bus stand there are many tea stalls. The tea usually costs arond Rs.5/- . The quantity is very small when compared to places in kerala.

In June July, it seems to be the mango season in thanjavur. There were lots of mangoes costing around Rs.20/- per kg. There was one particular bigger variety (kilichundan mambazham i guess) which was plenty here during this time. There were also lots of mosambi (a type of orange used mainly for their juice).

Somewhere close to the railway station, there is a place where the railway line runs above the road. I think it is close to Mary's corner.

Some of my teachers

St.Mary's school is situated at Pattom (pincode 695004). There are three schools in this line, Central school(kendriya vidyalaya) closest to pattom, then the government girls school(GHS) after that and finally St. Mary's school.

I studied in St.Mary's school from LKG to 10th (SSLC) . In those days, higher secondary was not the norm. After 10th you went to college for Pre degree course (PDC).

One of the earliest memories of teachers is of Beta teacher (I wonder if the spelling is correct) from nursery school and Celine teacher, who taught english and especially the story of the fox and sour grapes.

I also have some memories of the Ayah from the nursery class.

From first to fourth standard, it was a separate section, St. Mary's LPS(lower primary school). I remember a particular headmistress , a nun, who gave me a consolation prize for a model of a windmill made from a plastic soap box and some wooden metre scales. I remember Omana teacher who taught me arithmetic /science . Iris teacher taught me english.

From fifth standart to seventh , it was called UPS (upper primary school). Our class was a mixed class consisting of girls and boys. But after that in High School, the classes were segregated into boys only classes and girls only classes.
Gracy teacher was the head mistress at the time i went to the fifth standard. But soon Thomas Sir took over as head master. He was very strict. But some of the good advice he gave during the school assembly were very useful.

Daniel Sir who also was in charge of the store taught us drawing and a bit of book binding. Another teacher whose name I cannot recall taught us sewing. Lizy teacher and another sir taught us exercises (cardio ?) during the drill period.

One of the teachers that I remember well was Lucy teacher, who taught me english and math in UPS. She also was my class teacher. Annamma teacher taught me hindi for a couple of years. Annie Teacher taught me malayalam for a couple of years. There was another teacher (whose face is in my memory, but whose name I cannot recall) who taught me english in LPS and then science in UPS. Most of these teachers would be seated in their staff room to the left side of the then school auditorium near its entrance.

Satyan sir (Sathya Kumar sir) taught me biology and was my class sir in high school.He had a unique style of teaching. Das sir taught me mathematics. Alexander sir taught me physics and Ruby kutty teacher taught me chemistry. Ambrose sir taught me english. Jose sir (of the ncc) taught me social studies.
There are many other teachers whose names I cannot recollect, but whose faces and some of the lessons they taught remain vividly in my mind.

organic pet food

Going green seems to be the buzz word these days. This is the case with the food used by humans in most of the developed countries. The trend seems to be catching up in the case of pet foods as well. But in a country like India , where a lot of people find it hard to have at least one good meal per day, all of this seems to be a bit over the top.

Now truly food for human consumption that is to be labelled as organic must be grown without the use of pesticides and must be processed without using any chemical processes. There are very good regulators in the USA which control these in the case of human food.

But as far as the pet food industry is concerned , the regulations are not so rigid.

If you observe some of the dog food, you might notice the bright colours and artificial flavours, additives, preservatives etc. Some of these may be harmful to the pets and might cause problems like itches / allergies on the skin or ever worse medical problems. Most of the pet food is made from waste meat leftover after high quality portion of the meat has been taken for human consumption. Some of the commercial pet food might contain damaged meat and waste grain that might be mouldy. In short the pet food industry might use most of the waste leftovers from the food used for human consumption.

So your best bet would be to find pet food that might be natural , and does not contain pesticides and fungicides. You could also source the grains that are organically grown for human consumption and then process it for use as pet food. If you truly love your pets, you will enjoy spending the time to process the food grains. But be careful and see if the vitamin and mineral requirements of your pet can be fulfilled by your pet food. Liver , rice , vegetables can make up a good mixture.

If you search around you might also see some certified types of pet food / dog food, or pet food made from all natural ingredients in some pet shops.

Also raw food which is uncooked might have higher quantity of proteins and minerals.
But be careful about feeding raw meat or stale food to pets as they might contain toxins harmful to the pets.

A new car may be dependable , but may be costly and you might be forced to pay out higher EMI if you are buying the car on a car loan, since the loan rates are going up with the high inflation . But if you look around in the second hand market, you might be able to make a good deal on a second hand vehicle, but be warned that you should do proper checking on the papers and quality of the vehicle by an expert before you sign on the dotted line.

In Indian families in the cities , if both the father and mother are working parents, it is common to depend on hotel food or fast food or snacks from the bakery at least once or twice a week. Most of this type of food may be fatty and the soda (carbonated drinks) contain empty calories and lots of sugar (you will be surprised at the quantity of sugar that is listed on the contents of most carbonated drinks) . Drinking a lot of carbonated drinks without washing the teeth properly is an easy way to tooth decay and tooth ache.

Most parents seem to forget about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables for the healthy growth of the human body. It is quite useful to stock up on the fresh fruits of the season which may provide a good snack for children.

Carrots, cucumbers etc and be sliced up and served as an alternative to oily snacks like chips.

You can use water or fresh juices or tender coconut water (karikkin vellam or elani) if available instead of carbonated beverages.

journey from trivandrum to tanjore via trichy in transport buses

Recently I travelled from trivandrum to thanjavur via trichy using public transport buses.
I started out from trivandrum at around 7 pm in a SETC (Tamilnadu transport) bus (reportedly ultra deluxe !! ) bound for chennai (madras). I had earlier booked the ticket around one week earlier at the booking office near the entrance of the ksrtc depot at thampanoor in trivandrum. The fare was around 265 rupees for the trivandrum to trichy trip.

The bus started at around 7:10 pm . Most of the seats were empty . But once it reaced nagercoil, the bus filled up. The bus also stopped at tirunelveli and madurai before trichy. It also stopped at a couple of wayside eateries. The first place around 90 km from madurai was not very good in terms of neatness.

The speed was also moderate. It reached Trichy around 6 am the next morning. The bus stand for the bus from trichy to thanjavur was close to where the S.E.T.C. buses were stopped.
There were many buses leaving for tanjore from trichy (but most were going to the new bus stand). It took around one and a half hours to cover the distance from trichy to tanjore.

The bus that I took stopped at the new bus stand. There was a town bus leaving for the old bus stand from there.

trivandrum to tanjore via trichy bypass

Usually we would go to karaikudi via second melur cut(2nd cut so as not to enter the town) on NH 45 B , visit some relatives there and go to thanjavur along the old road through pudukottai. It is a small road (old style without medians and with more than its fair share of potholes especially close to tanjore ). Since it passes through a few small towns also, the road is very crowded also in the morning and afternoon.

This time around we decided to go directly to tanjavur. We started from trivandrum in the early morning around 5 am. We used the old nh upto nagercoil. That was the part which usually consumes most time. But that day because of some early morning rain, the roads were pretty empty. After nagercoil we reached thovalai which is a major market for flowers. After that the four lane highway starts and extends upto madurai. This time around , there were two new toll booths which were not there last time.

At madurai there is a bypass which is of the old style without any medians of around 20 kms. There are a lot of toll booths on this by pass . But you can pay the toll at the first booth and show the receipt at the other toll booths. This road is also pretty crowded at some parts of the day since it is close to madurai.

After that the road connects to the four lane highway at two places (The first connection goes somewhere else other than trichy ) The second connection just goes straight to trichy and chennai after that. There is a nice restaurant (ghar dhaba) run by BP petrol bunk at othakadai, but it also is crowded at certain times of the day. The toilet facilities also seem to be pretty good, if there are women travellers with you.

On the four lane highway close to trichy, there is a cut that goes to thanjavur. You can see the green sign board. (This is close to trichy distillaries).
As you go towards chennai, the cut is towards the left, you go down the cut and then turn to the right below the nh to proceed to tanjore (or even velankanni , pondicherry etc i guess). After an intial distance of some crowded roads, you will reach a four lane highway which goes upto tanjore and beyond that. There is a cut that goes to tanjore somewhere near the tamil university.

After one or two days of very good sunshine the fleshy part can be detatched from the shell (automatically or using a curved metal rod). Then you have to slice up the fleshy part into smaller pieces if you are using a small oil mill or you can use the whole hemispherical piece if you are using a big oil mill. Either way you have to dry it till almost all the water content is removed. This will take around 1 to 2 weeks depending on the heat in the sunshine. After that you take the resulting dried coconut flesh called copra to a mill where they will extract the coconut oil from it. The residue after removing the oil is called pinnakku ( coconut oil cake )and is used as cattle feed or manure.

Now in bigger oil mills there are other dryers for drying the coconut so that you do not have to depend on the sunshine.

Virgin coconut oil usually refers to coconut oil that is extracted from coconut milk directly through other processes without using heat .Virgin coconut oil is said to have more desirable properties / benefits than ordinary coconut

Some people might also have come across organic coconut oil and refined coconut oil.

Coconut oil has many uses
In kerala edible coconut oil was used largely for cooking. Later on there was some sort of a movement against coconut oil relating it to cholestrol, fat etc, and palmolein also was popularised . Some people will argue about the health benefits of coconut oil related to weight loss, diet, thyroid , cholestrol control etc. Coconut oil is also used for cosmetic purposes, for rubbing into the hair ( hair care , hair growth, hair repair, growinglong hair ) and the whole body ( skin care ) as some sort of moisturiser.

buying a second hand car from indus motors

We were looking to buy a second hand car after our our old ambassador car started developing problems with the brake and due to shortage of spare parts for the carburetor. An auto driver pointed out the true value outlet of maruti managed by indus motors.

We were planning to buy a second hand car around Rs.1.5 lakhs. There was a maruti 800 in the true value showroom which had run around 50000 km for that price.

But when we went to pay the advance amount of Rs.5000/- for that, we happened to see a maruti esteem with a petrol engine from 1997 that somebody had exchanged for a newer model the day before. Compared to the maruti 800 we were more happy with the maruti esteem since it was more spacious. It also was priced around Rs. 75000/-. Since the maruti esteem was an old model from 1997, it did not have the usual warranty and tune up that was available for second hand cars of later models.
The fuel efficiency of the maruti esteem was only about 8 km per litre which was comparable with our old ambassador. But it was much less than that of the maruti 800 reportedly closer to 13 km per litre or so.

Some people watch out for breaking news on film stars and read almost every magazine or website on films for gossip about film actors. They will collect photos of film actresses and paste them on their walls and books.

The contessa was launched around 1983 by hindustan motors (HM). When it came out it was a nice car with very good foreign car looks and plenty of room inside, when the other cars at the time had an indian look like the fiat and the ambassador. Some people may classify it as a muscle car. But it had some problems like low mileage, and some problems with the rear suspension. It was based on some phased out model of general motor.

In the beginning, it had bmc engine and later on there was isuzu engine in contessa classic ? was used.

You can buy a used contessa for pretty low price nowadays. Some people buy second hand used contessa cars and modify it a lot by fitting newer engine, power steering, bigger wheel discs etc.

mississippi river

It has a elevation of around 1450 feet above sea level at the source and fall off to sea level at the gulf of Mexico. Lots of barges carry a lot of freight along the river. Some of the stories by Mark Twain take place close to or on the mississippi river.

There are lots of places for enjoying family vacations on the mississippi river with lots of private boat tours and charter boats for river cruises or enjoy the great river road.

But now there has been a lot of flooding on the mississippi river. The flooding on the river might go up to record heights. There might be immediate evacuation on the banks.
Worries about flood have made the government to blast a levee in Missouri. This might have sent lots of flood water into farmlands in Missouri.

Flood waters seem to be rising near Memphis

landline phones cordless phones etc

The first telephone that we had in our home was the old landline phone from bsnl. It was a phone manufactured by bpl. It was a very simple phone, it did not have any bells and whistles.

Then after some time we applied for caller id facility. So we wanted a phone with clip facility and display. One of my father's friend told him about a simple display unit that can be connected to the existing landline. It was far less costly than a new phone with clip display. It worked for around two weeks before there was some fault in the display with some digits not getting displayed properly.

Then we bought a phone by with display and clip facility. It had a pretty majestic look and had a lot of lights on the number getting dialled and hadset. But here also the display started to have complaints within around 8 months. But the rest of the phone worked very well for a long long time.

Afterwards we bought a phone from beetel. Here also the display was pretty good. But there was some sort of screeching noise in the handset after around a year.

At that time we saw that some of the popular cordless phones had become cheaper. We also read some reviews on cordless telephones. Then we bought a cordless phone by voxtel which seemed to be the best cordless phone. This was costlier than the earlier corded ones. But it has been working pretty well for more than one year. The only problem is that the phone connection will not work if there is no current supply, since the base station is connected to the mains and does not have any battery backup. We had also bought a cordless phone made by bpl. But it had some problem with the battery since the battery would not last very long even after a full charge on its cradle.

mobile operators

The first cell phone connection that I took was a prepaid connection from Idea mobile (formerly bpl mobile) from the birla group. That was because most of my students(from IT field) were having idea connection, even though airtel was the most popular network at that time.

That connection was mainly for my father's usage when he had to go to the hospital for treatment for diabetic related problems.

Then after some time, my brother took a connection from airtel. He was just going through the various options and set up caller tunes. He just used it for 1 month and realised that it was a waste of money and then cancelled it off by calling the customer service centre.

The idea connection was put to a lot of use for std calls by me for calling my fiancee. There were some nice schemes like std call of 3 minutes for one rupee or so for 1 month etc.

When we travel to Tamil nadu (roaming) the idea connection usually shifts to aircel network. There are some parts of the highway, where there is no connectivity .

Then after some time my brother took a bsnl connection and a cell phone with the capacity to handle dual simcards. He would charge it with a special recharge which would give him a lot of free calls on the bsnl network.

I also took up a bsnl prepaid connection based on the pyari jodi plan which gives me free calls to my landline number. The network coverage also seems to be better than idea network while roaming.

I usually go for recharge with full talktime via the flexi route . Some ladies do not like this because they have to leave their cell phone numbers at the shop. Idea had a nice recharge coupon at Rs. 125/- which gives full talktime.

Recently I took up a virgin mobile connection which gave an offer of 25 ps per call(per minute) even for std calls. There seems to be some tieup with tata docomo.

axis bank formerly uti bank

In the old days only PSU banks like SBI, SBT, Indian Bank, Canara Bank were common in Kerala. There were some other banks like Federal bank also.I and membeers of our family used SBI bank. But when UTI bank and other non PSU banks started opening branches, we would watch that with bemusement.

We wanted to send some subscription for an online game. When we enquired at SBI, the older generation staff was not sure of the options/method for sending the subscription. That was when we went round searching for the facilities in other non PSU banks.

UTI bank was renamed as Axis bank.

When I went to open a savings bank account in Axis Bank, the staff was very courteous and told us about the documents required to open the account. This was very different from the indifferent and unwelcoming attitude of the staff in a Catholic Syrian bank branch, where I had gone with a friend who wanted to open an account there.

After the application form etc were submitted with the required documents, the account was opened within a very short time. The debit card and password /pin etc arrived by speed post / courier within a few days.

The minimum balance for the SB(sbeazy) was Rs.5000/-

Later on I started a fixed deposit also with quarterly interest payment. I was able to do the whole work online, and the bank sent the reciept for the fd by post to me.
The bank pays the interest quarterly according to the financial year quarter, while SBI pays the interest quarterly, a quarter year from the day of deposit.

Most parents in kerala want their children to take up engineering or medical studies once they are past their 12th or atleast go for some nursing course.

In the era of self financing institutions the fee for such courses could be very high.

Most middle class parents would not have the financial resources for this. Then they think of taking out educational loans for their kids. In the old days education loans were not very student friendly. But now some things seem to have changed.

For studies in india, a bank would usually give upto around 4 lakhs to 7 lakhs.
Some banks finance only upto 75% to 90% of the total amount needed for the course especially for studies abroad in foreign countries and the student may have to make up the remaining portion from his own pocket. Sometimes the loan is given jointly in the name of the student and the parent. Some consultancy services have also sprung up claiming to provide personalised advice and guidance.

Most banks require
admission letter detailing the fee etc from the institute where the student is going to study and the usual documents which are required for taking a loan.

In the case of students going to private nursing colleges in the neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu or Karnataka, some banks are not eager to give the loan facility due to non-uniformity in the fee structure and some other problems.

Usually the repayment of the loan would begin around 1 year from completion of the course according to proper schedule or 6 months after getting a job whichever is earlier.The EMI on a 4 lakh loan would be somewhere around Rs.8000/- to 10,000/- per month , but would change according to the interest rates contracted upon.

The end result would be that, if the student is weak in his studies or falls into bad company, he would not be able to complete the course and he would be left with arrear papers, and his parents would have to repay the loan or the student may have to take up the first job that comes up and most of his salary would be spent in repaying the loan, because the interest rate on student loans is quite interesting!! to say the least.

There have also been instances when some student allegedly committed suicide because of not being able to raise a loan to continue with their professional courses.

hindustan motor's ambassador

In the old days (around 1970's) the common cars in india were hindustan motor's ambassador, fiats and premier padminis. My father bought a second hand ambassador car around1977. It served him very well for more than 30 years till his demise.

It was a really spacious car. It ran on petrol with an SU carburettor. With proper tuning by an experienced mechanic you could make the engine real silent and you could get mileages of something like 8 to 10 km per litre in the city. It could go upto around 110 km per hr. You could run down to 15 to 20 km/hr in the fourth gear without having to change to 3rd or 2nd, which was pretty useful for city driving.

It had good ground clearance and the suspension was pretty good and suitable for the potholes on the typical kerala road.

One of the main problems was rust, if the mudguards or undercarriage or running board was not properly painted and given periodic washing, especially since the rains in kerala used to leave the roads all muddy.

Even though many people converted their petrol cars to diesel or LPG in the 90's, my father seemed to like the petrol engine and did not change to diesel or LPG. He overhauled the engine a couple of times, when the pulling power declined.

Almost everyone who is remotely interested in investing in the stock market must have seen a list of examples of so called best or top blue chip stocks.

The price volatility of so called blue chip stocks which are recommended for long term portfolios are assumed to be lower than other stocks. But some of the so called blue chips like Maruti Suzuki, Infosys technologies etc have crashed by 10% or even more recently.

The PE (price to earning) ratios of so called blue chip stocks are usually much more higher than other stocks. So any hint of slow growth in earnings, or any negative news on the management front seem to send these stocks (or for that matter any stock) into a tailspin.

The dividend yield of some of these so called blue chip stocks like bharti airtel are also very very low. Some time back, the stock had fallen a lot when per second billing was introduced, and also when it was acquiring Zain in Africa.

It is quite interesting to see the dividend yield of some of the so called best blue chip stocks.

Another stock like NTPC has fallen off a lot following the FPO offering.

Some of the stocks like ONGC have shown a lot of zig zag motion with news of the FPO offering.

Some stocks like SBI etc have started to go back after a big fall during the time when rates were going up with high inflation though it is not clear if the upmove can be sustained.

journey from trivandrum to karaikudi and then to tanjavur (tanjore) and then to trichy

We took a trip from trivandrum to karaikudi during the first week of april. Then we went to tanjavur from karaikudi.

We started from trivandrum around 5 am. Thus we were able to avoid most of the traffic between trivandrum and martandam. The journey from there to tirunelveli was also pretty quick. There was not much congestion at tirunelveli at the place where some road construction work is going on. We stopped at a small tea shop on the outskirts and had some tea and bought some uzhunnu vadai.

But after that, it was pretty hot.

This time around, the number of diversions for road works seemed to be less when compared to last december

journey-from-trivandrum-to-karaikudi

This time around the journey pretty quick since we were already familiar with the route.

We reached karaikudi around noon.

The next day we took a trip to tanjavur from karaikudi. The trip was along the old route to trichy. The road was the usual two lane road without dividers. We went to pudukottai, and from there to tanjore. The journey took around 2 hours.

From tanjavur, we went to trichy for some shopping. On the way, we also saw a shrine at poondi.

Some of the road was very narrow along the side of a river which i guess was some portion of the cauvery.
There were some trees and it was pretty cool compared to some of the other portions of the trip.

The return trip to karaikudi was after sunset. We had our food at some hotel in Pudukottai. The food was nice and we also had ginger tea.

journey from trivandrum to madras /chennai

We travelled from trivandrum to madras around christmas last year.The journey was via martandam, tirunelveli , madurai , trichy and then to chennai.

Since we left from trivandrum early in the morning (around 4.30 am) , there was no block on the roads (usually there is a lot of congestion at martandam, tirunelveli etc.) . The 4 lane highway is pretty good , except for some work going on at tirunelveli and trichy. Near trichy , there were lots of big potholes on the road and the traffic was pretty slow due to some big trailers going very slow on some narrow roads. There were lots of places ending with patti along the way to chennai.

There were also lots of toll booths along the way.

After madurai there were some vegetarian restaurants (dhaba ?) attached to the bpcl ? (bharat petroleum) petrol pumps. They seemed to be quite neat and the toilet facilities for both genders seemed to be okay.

We reached the outskirts of chennai around 5:30pm. We asked some truck drivers for directions to Kottivakkam. They kindly pointed out that entering Chennai city and travelling in Chennai traffic without knowing the proper route at night time was not the best option (we could understood that the next day when we drove around with one of our relatives especially with lots of flyovers and some construction works going on.). They told us that the better option would be to go back to Vandalur, and then use some state highway to get to the ECR (east coast road) and use the ECR to get to Kottivakkam.

We had to ask directions at some places. The people were very helpful. The only problem was stopping the car at some places because of the heavy evening traffic. The State highway was pretty deserted and there were some large potholes also on that. But once we reached ECR, it was a pretty straight road, and we had to ask directions only at a petrol pump for the correct turn into a side lane.

I recently read about how some commercial sex workers in Sonagachi in Calcutta, West Bengal , had set up a cooperative bank called Usha cooperative bank, with the help of an NGO called Durbar mahila samanwaya committee. The aim seems to be to reduce the influence of goons and moneylenders. It seems to be a success. There seems to be some idea of opening branches and going into some other business ventures.

Recently I went to visit someone in leepuram near kanyakumari.
We started out around 11am from trivandrum. The roads were not that crowded at that time.After the overpass over the railway line at nagercoil, the road divides into two. When we go to thirunelveli, we usually take the one on the left and the other one if we want to go into the town. But for going to kanyakumari, I think it is better to take the road on the right, especially if you are not conversant in Tamil, as there are boards all along the way in english and tamil.

Anyway we took the road along the left, went someway and asked some autodriver about the way. He pointed us the along the road that went straight through the town, along the bus stand and some market street, both of which were very congested at that time, and there were some unmarked bumps near some school or something.

After that you go along NH47 towards kanyakumari. The view on both sides is nice with paddy fields, coconut trees and small water bodies. I also noticed some fields with tapioca.

After going along NH47 for around 20 km we asked for directions at a wayside shop and the person gave directions to a road along the left which led us to some place called kottaram and vattakotai (circular fort) .There were some potholes on this road. From there leepuram was around 3 kms away towards the right from the junction.
(just before vattakotai some large scale construction on some highway or something seems to be going on)

For the return journey , after coming back to NH47, we just followed the boards on the traffic signals at the junctions. This time round we avoided coming through the inside of nagercoil. Just outside the town, there are roadside vendors selling tender coconuts and nongu sherbet (nongu is the fruit of panamaram a type of palm tree).
Nongu is a lot cheaper and fresher than one can get in trivandrum.

But on the return journey the road was a lot more congested, especially near martandam, the kaliyakkavila border, pappanamcode etc. and it took more than 1 hour to cover the last 25km.

Anyway I think the best time for this route would be in the early morning before 7am (very sparse traffic but the buses might come at you on the wrong side of the road when they are overtaking etc) or around 11am (light to medium traffic).

I used to prefer only bank recurring deposits and bank fixed deposits. But some years ago , when the stock market indices were close to their peak, I was drawn towards stocks. At that time mutual funds seemed to be a nice option.
As I was using State Bank of India, I started off with SBI mutual fund, I made some investment in SBI Taxgain, SBI muticap, SBI global, SBI multiplier 93 all of which were dividend option. At that time the NAV made some nice gains of about 20 to 25 % in around 7 to 8 months on paper and I got some dividend (but nowhere near the gains on paper) from the funds except for SBI global.
So in retrospect, I should have redeemed/sold the units (except for taxgain scheme which is locked for 3 years) at that time and pocketed the gains .
But since I was new to the concept of mututal funds I did not do anything, then the market indices crashed, there was recession in the US etc and the NAV declined by around 40% from the level when I bought the units of the funds.
After that some of the NAV's have recovered somewhat.

So I decided to learn how to invest directly in stocks instead of depending on others.
I looked around at the brokerage options available. There was Hedge equities opposite LIC buildings at Pattom, Capstocks also near pattom and also at east fort, Sharekhan on the road from spencers to bakery junction , geojit bnp paribas opposite smv school etc.

After talking to the persons in the various offices and spending some time reading reviews on the internet, I decided to go to geojit. They asked for money in cash(not cheque) for the application form. I filled up the form/booklet and had to affix my signature at around 20 or more places in that booklet. So you should be prepared to spend at least one hour and read everything before signing up. You also might need to give an email id since they send the contract notes by email if you are using online trading

I went in for the online option. I initially had some problem with the login password , password for the encrypted pdf file which contained the login password etc ( they mention a particular version of adobe which did not work on windows 98 and the older version of adobe did not seem to handle the encryption properly, so I had to use another pdf reader ) . Anyway after that initial hiccup , there does not seem to be any problem.

I paid the initial investment amount by cheque (There is online transfer option from some banks). It took 2 or 3 days for the amount to be available in my account.

One thing to remember is that there seems to be a minimum transaction limit of Rs.1000/- and a minimum brokerage of around Rs.20/- per transaction.

The route was along
Trivandrum - Martandam - Nagercoil - Thirunelveli -Madurai - Melur - Karaikudi
around 400 km. NH 47 and then NH 7

The road from Trivandrum to Nagercoil was the worst in terms of congestion and it took around 2 hours. There was also a small strip of road at Martandam near the bridge which was full of potholes (This could be avoided by taking a side road ).

After that there was a 4-lane road (2-lanes each for either direction) for most of the route to Madurai, which bypassed most of the small towns. But there is some construction going on at some parts of the road. So there is diversion at some parts
and you might also see some vehicles, (some of which are part of the road works ) coming at you from the opposite direction in your lane due to these diversions.
There was also some construction work near Thirunelveli which caused some traffic block for around 20 minutes.

Earlier you would buy sweets like thenkuzhal(the sweet, not the murukku) , aluva etc at thirunelveli. You could buy small cucumbers, pomegranite at various small towns, but most of these are not possible on the new 4-lane road unless you went out of the way along the exit to visit those towns. You could go to the new bus stand at Thirunelveli and buy the sweets from the shops inside the bus stand.

Earlier it was a headache to go through Madurai due to the traffic, but now there is a bypass [ There is a right angle turn towards the right with a (unmarked ?)bump leading to the bypass ] There is a toll of Rs. 35 /-(depending on where you are going) and around four toll gates where you have to show your receipt. There is also some traffic on the bypass since it is connected to the city at some points.

After that the journey is along the 4-lane road for some more distance. You can bypass Melur and take the cut for Karaikudi from the 4-lane road if you know the correct cut [ a vendor of tender coconuts on the roadside told me about that in terms of the approximate distance km ]

After that the road is the usual 2-lane(1-lane each for either direction)with some tamarind trees on the sides.

There is a lot more traffic in Karaikudi. Traffic signals have been installed. A traffic warden shouts at people who have not parked properly through a public address system. Road dividers have come up on the main road.

There seems to be a type of people who live on credit. They buy the latest items like the newest model cars, tv' s etc and do not care if they are not able to afford the items. They would just charge it to their cards or take out a new loan. This was not common in India in the 70's . But with the advent of liberalisation and entry of foreign banks, this type of people are becoming common in india, especially among those in the IT field.
Till the recent recession in the USA and the corresponding slowdown in India, banks were competing with each other in issuing credit cards. Some people would just use a credit card to waste money on the latest and costliest stuff and would then just go about paying the minimum possible on their credit card debt per month.Some people do not even understand that even a single mistake on their part or a late/ missed payment might sometimes just blow up the interest rates on their credit card debt. They sometimes fail to understand that there is no such thing as a free lunch with regard to credit card companies.
Some of the younger generation seem to have forgotten the value of frugality and the concept of living within their means.
When you use credit cards , you do not have the same feeling / care as when you count out currency notes. Also some credit card companies entice you with offers of cash back offers, free gifts etc if you buy a lot of items using your credit card. All of this sometimes leads to overspending.

hair oil

In Kerala, people used to use plain coconut oil heated/treated with hibiscus or some other spices as hair oil.
Some of the women had very long hair. But then they started to cut down the length of their hair just like males.
So I think their concept of use of hair oil also has changed with time.
But now you can buy varieties of hair oil, perfumed etc in bottles, small pouches etc. with attributes like non greasy, non sticky, stops hair loss, adds vitality to your hair, gets rid of dandruff, herbal hair oil, almond drops hair oil, amla hair oil, leaves hair soft, silky and shiny etc.
But I do not know what is the difference between the old hair oil and the new fangled ones except the cost and ease of buying and using .

In the old days, the only telecom company in India was BSNL, the government controlled entity.
There was no mobile network. Only landlines were present. Getting a telephone connection was a long process. You applied for a connection and waited for something like months before you got a telephone alloted to you.

But now with the arrival of cell phone companies , getting a phone connection is a lot easier. You just go to a phone shop (or even some other general stores) with a passport size photo and copies of identification documents like voter id etc, and you can buy a sim card which is usually activated then itself on receipt of the identification documents by the shop keeper.

There have been problems with call congestion on certain networks during peak usage hours. There are also complaints about billing on post paid services of some service providers. There are also some problems with unwanted promotional messages, advertisement calls etc.

In kerala mobile phones have become very common place. Even people earning very little money like casual labourers , auto drivers etc use mobile phones (usually cheap mobile handsets with black and white display) to keep in touch with their clientele.
Some college students carry around two or three mobile phones. Students seem to be searching for the latest and hottest mobile phones. Sometimes this kind of mobile phone usage seems to develop into something like an addiction. There was even an incident when some student committed suicide apparently because his parents enforced some ban on his cell phone usage.

There also have been safety concerns on the use of mobile phones by very young children.
Some governments have banned the use of cell phones in schools and some universities like anna university in tamilnadu have banned the use of camera phones in engineering colleges during class hours.

Using a mobilephone while driving is very dangerous since the reaction time may be slower.

Some of the qualities to look for in a mobile phone seem to be ruggedness ,durability, memory, camera quality in case of a phone with camera, texting ease, should fit easily in ones pocket etc.

In the old days you had cameras which used film, It was very costly to develop the film and print it out. The capacity was also small.
Nowadays there are digital cameras where the capacity can be expanded using memory cards. You can review the photos on the screen or on a computer, use software to make the photos prettier and print them out on special photo paper (slightly more expensive than ordinary paper)

In the old days for marriages rececptions, they would keep petromax lamps on hand in case the current went out.
Later on they started renting out generators which usually ran on kerosene or petrol , usually starts up on petrol and runs on kerosene, and were very noisy. The starting up of the generator was also quite hard with having to pull a cord to turn the flywheel? .
But now a days you can see generators in most shops due to the worsening power situation with power cuts and so on. Most of them are self starting as in they will start when you turn the key
In some of the big offices / banks you can see big generators which are of the size of a small room with huge mufflers to cut down on the sound. Even the small generators now are relatively silent when compared to the old ones.
