sum of n terms of a geometric progression

find the nth term of the series 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + ...
Also find the sum of the first n terms

The sequence 1, 2 , 4 , 8 , 16 , ... is a geometric progression (G.P.) with
first term a=1 and common ratio, r = 2
since 2/1 = 4/2 = 8/4 =16/8 = ...

nth term = a {r ^ ( n-1) } = 2^(n-1)
