Let A = {1, 2, 3,...,14}. Define a relation R from A to A by

R = {(x, y) : 3x – y = 0, where x, y ∈ A}. Write down its domain, co domain and

range.

note that the relation is A to A so that the images have to be in A

  3x – y = 0

means y = 3x

put x  = 1 , y = 3*1 = 3 so (1,3) is in R

put x = 2 , y = 3*2 = 6 so (2,6) is in R

put x = 3 , y = 3*3 = 9 so (3,9) is in R

put x = 4 , y = 3*4 = 12 so (4,12) is in R

put x = 5 , y = 3*5 = 15 is not in A

so we stop here

R = { (1,3) ,(2,6),(3,9),(4,12) }

domain = {1,2,3,4} ------------- values taken by x

range = {3,6,9,12} --------------values taken by y

codomain = A ={1,2,3,...,14}

2. Define a relation R on the set N of natural numbers by R = {(x, y) : y = x + 5,
x is a natural number less than 4; x, y ∈N}. Depict this relationship using roster
form. Write down the domain and the range.

restriction is for x

so x = 1,2,3

put x = 1 y =x+5 = 1+5 = 6 so (1,6) is in R

put x = 2 y =x+5 = 2+5 = 7 so (2,7) is in R

put x = 3 y =x+5 = 3+5 = 8 so (3,8) is in R

roster form

R = {(1,6),(2,7), (3,8)}

domain = {1,2,3}

range = {6,7,8}
